Congratulation to Mi’pu’mi Games  and the whole team for such a great prize! Project Manager and Senior Sound Designer Felix Diekhake and the CEO of Mi’pu’mi Games Gregor Eigner about the collaboration:

team_fdi

“We were surprised and thrilled to hear that the protagonist of the first episode would be a composer – and we knew immediately that the music for a game like this would have to be something else. Gregor and his team came to us with a strong musical vision: not only would the music have to convey a range of intense emotions from loneliness and loss to elation and bliss, it would also tie into the game’s storyline itself and develop over the course of the game based on the player’s choices, working as a signal for inspiration and, ultimately, feedback and reward for completion of the game. While the game is set in the early 20th century, the team felt they would like to contrast the historical setting with some more modern sounding elements in the music. Finally, they asked us for a layered approach, with a unified mood theme that would work as the background music throughout the episode, and three different layers to fit the mood theme that would indicate sources of inspiration during the game and serve as the closing theme, with the tone of the music depending on the choices the player made. Creating the soundtrack was a long and winding (and occasionally bumpy) road. But at the end we were rewarded with a soundtrack we are immensely proud of for a game we hugely enjoyed playing. Mi’pu’mi is a wonderful team that it’s a great pleasure to work for and with and the experience made us look all the more forward to both playing and composing music for Episode 2 of The Lion’s Song – which we meanwhile did.”

Felix Diekhake (Project Manager & Senior Sound Designer, Dynamedion)

gregor_eigner

“THE LION’S SONG is an episodic narrative game about four creative minds. Since the main character of the first episode is a composer it was key that the music would reflect the struggle with inspiration. We had productive meetings where we discussed the game, the game story and our referenced ideas for the game. Dynamedion understood to come back with audio previews really quickly. We had a short finding phase to get the actual music production on track. Dynamedion did an excellent job to give birth to a fantastic audio landscape and supported all changes that we requested perfectly. After our collaboration on the first episode, we are eager to evolve this partnership on our future episodes for THE LION’S SONG.”

BLUE BYTE’S CHAMPIONS OF ANTERIA WITH MUSIC BY DYNAMEDION

The skill is to create a composition that thrills your listeners and generates an incredible sound atmosphere. Come with us on our journey into the wonderful world of “Champions of Anteria” and we will shed some light on our work on the new game.

COA_title

We had the pleasure to be a part of the epic real-time spectacle and worked on the new “Champions of Anteria” (UBISOFT / BLUE BYTE) tactical RTS game with orchestra, choir, soloist recordings and music compositions.

It is always exciting to plunge into new worlds of games and to generate a remarkable sound atmosphere. Working with UBISOFT / BLUE BYTE again was a wonderful experience. We worked with a great musical concept that was developed by the BLUE BYTE Audio Department under direction of Audio Director Stefan Randelshofer – more on that below. We also gratefully acknowledge the collaboration with the Budapest Scoring Symphony Orchestra in Hungary that surpasses our expectations consistently and implements our work in a wonderful kind. Our founder and lead composer Tilman Sillescu talks about our work in the new game “Champions of Anteria” and the result of an exciting project:

team_tsi

WHAT WAS THE INTENTION BEHIND THE SOUNDTRACK?

“Our intention was to emotionally draw the player into the wonderful game world of “Champions of Anteria” with the help of our music and to make the game experience more intensive with a beautiful soundtrack. Moreover it was very important to us to support the flexible game system musically. Music can achieve a lot in a video game – also in regards of the game structure. But the most important aspect is that the music can simply flow inside of a game system. Thereby it makes the player feel like he is in a conclusive game world.”

HOW DID YOU MANAGE THE TASK?

“The excitement was to find a fresh and unique basic sound for the new game. For “Champions of Anteria” we appreciate to represent the medieval setting musically. Usually we break the task intuitive, in case of this game we stress the new interactive system to accompany the new and flexible game system optimally.”

WHERE ARE THE TRACKS BEING USED WITHIN THE GAME?

“CoA uses an highly interactive music system that adapts to the player’s choices and experiences in a unique way; every champion is represented by a solo instrument, or a group of instruments: brass for the Knight, choir for the Monk, woodwinds for The Archer etc. So, depending on which Champions you take with you, the arrangement of the music changes, forming evermore combinations – a fascinating concept!

We were mainly responsible for the base-tracks that were used for the start-up phases. Here, the overall intensity of the music gradually builds up as you progress through the game – so the music serves both to represent the events on screen as well as a reward for the successful player. The “menu” tracks we did add a nice extra twist: when you switch to the main menu while playing, the music is reduced to one or two solo instruments.”

WHERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES TO MASTER?

“Like I said, the music becomes more intense as you progress through the game. In the first and very calm levels we wanted a very barren and placid music that especially supports the beautiful nature settings. The levels develop to a very crowded and lively village daily routine with a lot of residents. Here we have represented musically the buzzing rural activities with often nearly dancing maddish rhythms. It was a great challenge for us to accompany the gradual boost of intensity in the game musically.”

WHAT DID YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE WORK?

“The best thing for me personally is always the phase in which our music is implemented and live recorded by the soloists and the orchestra. That was particularly important and intensive in this project because our soundtrack was created very orchestral but frequently enriched by lovely solos of historical instruments. It is always great to see how the musicians fill our compositions with their personality and the music makes the decisive step into analog life. A fact that Ubisoft always emphasizes.”

ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE RESULTS?

“Sure, definitely – and of course I hope our mix of emotional orchestral music and historical-medieval atmosphere pleases the “Champions of Anteria-fans” just as good as us.”

Tilman Sillescu (Creative Director, Dynamedion)

Our composer Henning Nugel created the music for the Champions of Anteria Demo Trailer. Take a look and listen:

Sonuscore Live Orchestra Raffle – Throwback

Together with Tilman Sillescu we retrospect on the Sonuscore Raffle and congratulate the winner Clelson Lopes on his incredible well deserved first place composition.

sonuscore-image

Sonuscore – the producers of incredible virtual instruments called for competition via email and facebook. Many of you sent them music of all kinds of genres, from Techno and EDM as well as Hollywood-style orchestra works and also more experimental classical compositions. The range of different music compositions was very huge and it was incredible to listen to all of them! Also the composers behind the tracks came from all over the world and it was a pleasure to see that so many people from different continents share the same passion for music. Sonuscore compiled roughly 40 compositions of the raffle for you to listen:

Although the decision was very hard to select the best track – we are happy to introduce to you the winner of the Raffle: Clelson Lopes from Brazil with his composition “Cosmos SpaceTime”. He won a coaching session with lead composer Tilman who listened to his music and gave him a personal feedback. Clelson has the chance to record one minute of his track by a professional live orchestra in one of Dynamedion´s OPEN ORCHESTRA SESSION. Tilman gave him a hand to optimize the composition to reach the best outcome. Today he tells us some insight about his personal thoughts about the raffle and the first coaching session with Clelson:

team_tsi

“It was a lot of fun for me to see how many great and very different compositions have been submitted to us. I was really impressed about the entire quality of the compositions – there are some talents we might have to keep in mind ;). It was hard for me to pick out a winner, at least 10 of these tracks also had to deserve to win. In collaboration with our team I decided in favor of the composition that has touched me the most emotionally. Cosmos SpaceTime is a really unique and amazing composition and the winner of the raffle, Clelson Lopes is an incredible friendly person. A few days ago we had our first Coaching-Skype-Call and we talked about further details. He would like to expend his orchestration a bit and we spoke about the orchestra toning that could do his composition good. In my opinion the track doesn´t need much, it is already very complete. But some harp, percussions here and there could make the whole sound more colorful. I am really excited to listen to the final version!”

Tilman Sillescu (Creative Director)

Tilman did his best to make this a lot of fun for our winner! We are also really looking forward to the final product! Stay tuned! 🙂

HITMAN – ARE WE STARS

We entered the world of assassination – In-game music and music of the Hitman promotion video “ARE WE STARS” written by Dynamedion.

the_class_are_we_stars

This time the marketing section from the creators of HITMAN (SQUARE ENIX / IO INTERACTIVE) had a very extraordinary idea to promote the latest game episode that plays in Thailand, Bangkok. Many of you probably have seen the music video of the Brooklyn-based alternative rock band “The Class” with their song “Are We Stars”. HITMAN fans don´t have to think twice to notice that something is wrong with the band. But you have to admit – the first time watching the video you weren´t sure if it´s a real new band or not.

The band has got a Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud account and on the Bandcamp website you can download their three songs for free. Well, three guesses who wrote the songs. We are very proud to announce that we were part of this great marketing strategy and promoted the new Thailand episode. Additionally to that we wrote the in-game music for the Bangkok episode that was also used in the trailer. The video shows the first impressions of the new levels in Bangkok and integrates some slight leads what players can expect about the mission of agent 47. The fictional lead singer of the band is Jordan Cross. His name appeared several times in different episodes but only in background dialogues. This time he is the target person for our agent. The mission “Club 27” takes the players into the opulent Himmapan Hotel and Resort at Chao Phyraya River outside Bangkok.

There are two things about HITMAN that distinguishes the game from others: On the one hand HITMAN occupies an enormous game depth. For example you can checkmate the subject in many different ways. The players feel “relieved” to discover another such crazy method to accomplish the mission. On the other hand you get agent 47 in an “appetizer format”. Each mission is characterized by great challenges, escalation contracts, exclusive subjects and a lot of opportunities to achieved one´s aim. Later in 2016 the final two episodes USA and Japan will be released.

The three songs for the latest episode in Thailand (“Are We Stars”“Shine A Light”“Gun Show”) were written by Felix Diekhake and produced by Christian Hartung. Felix gave us some insight into their work:

team_fdi

“Writing the songs for HITMAN was a real pleasure – after some stops in Italy and Marrakesh (more on that later), we were asked to create the music for the virtual band “The Class”. IOI gave us an elaborate briefing on the band’s backstory and character and some input on the desired style and we set to work – the first track we pitched was a pretty grungy number with rather psychedelic lyrics alluding to the events preceding the Bangkok episode (something along the lines of “I saw your pale hand wave goodbye as the crimson king got crowned….”) which ultimately didn’t fit what IOI were looking for, so we pushed the style to something more pop/electronic driven and the lyrics to something a little less oviously vague, which, after a few rounds of feedback, became “Are we stars?”. Once that one was done and approved, the other two tracks (“Gun Show” and “Shine A Light”) practically wrote themselves. Writing the songs was both a challenge (how much of the story can we reveal in the lyrics?) and a lot of fun. To see them come to life, first in the stellar production done by Christian Hartung, then in the game and the release through a “real” band, was really, really cool and something I’m very proud of. This is actually the first time ever that music I wrote came out on vinyl – I can’t wait to get my hands on that record :)”

Felix Diekhake

We present you “The Class” with their song “Are We Stars”: Enjoy!

HEROES OF INCREDIBLE TALES (HIT) WITH MUSIC AND VOCAL SOUND EFFECTS BY DYNAMEDION

Lead Composer Alex Röder and Project Manager Felix Diekhake reveal some insights into their work for the highly anticipated mobile game: composing music and, uhm, screaming their lungs out (more on that later).

Heroes_of_Incredible_Tales_1

Heroes of Incredible Tales (short: HIT) is an emerging Unreal Engine 4 mobile game published by NEXON, the worldwide leader in free to play mobile games in Korea. The developer NAT GAMES specializes in creating high quality mobile role-playing experiences. Yong-Hyun Park is the founder of NAT GAMES and renowned lead designer behind Lineage and TERA two of the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

The new HIT RPG coming this summer is already breaking records as the fastest growing game in Korea. Since the game was launched in November 2015 it achieved over 5 million downloads up until now, which means that a mind blowing ten percent of the whole Korean population are now playing the game. Chances are, you are not in Korea right now. We have good news for you: Heroes of Incredible Tales is now available in 140 countries and is playable in 10 different languages. The exciting and fascinating action-experience is augmented with innovative graphics for mobile devices.

The collaboration with NAT GAMES was especially great. Exciting projects are always an inspiration for our daily work. Lead composer Alex Röder gives us some insights:

AR6_0531

“The cooperation with NAT GAMES was very easy-going. The developer knew what he wanted and we quickly reached the goal. Moreover the communication was very friendly! Heroes of Incredible Tales has a lot of players and the user-numbers continue to grow steadily, which means our music will be accessible to a wide public. My part was to compose the lobby music – the music you can hear when you click through the different menus. The menus change with the game process and this change is reflected in the music. There are four different times of day which have all their own music. I am very satisfied with the result. It was a lot of fun working for the HIT project and I guess the music fits perfectly.”

Alex Röder (Lead Composer)

When you play you can choose from a class of four characters: Maybe you pick the guy with a giant sword or you decide in favor of the sexy lady with her scythe. 200 incredible and challenging levels await you to go through the simple but lightning fast attacks in gratifying battles. What makes Heroes of Incredible Tales unique and rewarding is the blend of intense action and deep customization.

Felix loves to scream – and this time he could run riot giving his full voice power to let the male character do the fight of his life!

team_fdi

“Working on Project Hit was great – NATGames’ Chief Sound Director Brian Ahn was an absolute pleasure to work for! First and foremost he had a very clear musical vision for the project which made working on HIT very inspiring for us.
The icing on the cake for me were the vocals we recorded: it turns out I had just the voice they wanted for the male character, so on top of writing emails and briefing composers I got to scream my heart out in front of a microphone for a few hours – and that is something I always enjoy.”

Felix Diekhake (Project Manager)

Don´t miss out on the HIT Announcement Trailer and getting a glimpse into the action for yourself:

Working with HIT was another experience that simply showed us how great it is to work with international teams. If you are about to embark on your own adventure and could use our services, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

PARADISE MEETS HELL: “DEAD ISLAND REVEAL TRAILER – TRIBUTE” WITH MUSIC PRODUCTION BY DYNAMEDION

In celebration of the new Dead Island Definitive Collection released on the 31th of May 2016 we had the pleasure to produce a new Dead Island Reveal Trailer.

dead_island_logo

It is a tribute to the legendary Dead Island trailer which originally debuted 5 years ago. The official announcement trailer was published in 2011 and won a Gold Lion at the Cannes Advertising Festival in the category “Best Internet Film”. Down to the present day the video has been watched about 15 million times. Dynamedion worked on the new reveal trailer with music arrangement, music production and organized a wonderful team of professional musicians. The classical piano quintet charms its listeners with calm, melancholy and gently sounds. The tangent and sensitive melody is in the foreground and lends a distinctive character to the new trailer.

DEAD ISLAND developed by TECHLAND (Poland) and published by DEEP SILVER (Germany) is an action role-playing survival horror video game. The game’s atmosphere is remarkable – on a beautiful island called Banoi with white sand and a fabulous beach, the four main characters have to survive a plague that turned the other residents of the island into flesh-eating zombies. You have to fight your way through this horde of undead creatures and search for missing relatives, medication and foodstuff. You have only one aim: to survive!

The award-winning trailer and its extremely moving music, composed by Giles Lamb, have been reinterpreted in a wonderful video production by Eins Medien where the five musicians and their instruments serve as the canvas by projecting the video on them. The interaction between the projection, the instruments and the musicians is truly exciting. The musicians and the video were recorded in the studio Tonmeister in Mainz (Germany).

The musicians Kai Schumacher (Piano), Beril Sun (Violin 1), Tonja Demianenco (Violin 2), Amélie Legrande (Viola), Emanuel Wehse (Cello) and the seven–headed video team under the direction of Lukas Rinker did an amazing job bringing that awesome trailer to live. The new Dead Island Definite Collection contains enhanced editions of Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide together with all previously published DLC and patches for the two games, as well as the newly introduced retro game Dead Island Retro Revenge. It is playable for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4. The collection comes with many great features as for example an enhanced resolution with 30 frames per second and an overworked user interface for a consistent look between Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide – and many more.

We don´t want to withhold the new Dead Island Reveal Trailer– Tribute anymore. Welcome to the holiday of your life. The dead never looked so alive:

If you want to learn more about Dead Island click here.

We want to say thank you to everybody who was involved in this great project. The collaboration was just wonderful.
